As I watch him, sometimes I am sad for what he didn't get. Early intervention is so important to children with Down syndrome, yet he didn't get any. He is almost 6 years old, the sized of a 2 year old, and functionally about a 1 year old. It is sad to me that he has not progressed any further than that. He has no self help skills. He is completely dependent.
But...he is slowly making progress. I'm constantly introducing new textures to him, showing him how to chew, and at times he really does try. He is now getting regular physical and speech therapy. I'm thankful for the two women that God led me too. They are both excellent and they come to our house to give him his therapy. Once he gets his orthotics to stabilize his ankles, it probably won't be long until he will be walking.
He does enjoy interacting with all of us and seeks out interaction at times. He has the cutest laugh and he has learned to give kisses and blow kisses. His daddy even taught him to give high fives. He is so easy going. Also, he LOVES to go bye-bye. He gets really excited when we put his coat on to go. We took a 9 hour car ride to a wedding last weekend and he was great the whole trip.
